El Sistema Indianapolis is an after-school music program operating at two Indianapolis Public Schools. We are inspired by the Venezuelan music education movement of "El Sistema" which uses ensemble music to effect social change. We believe that a supportive musical community inspires youth to achieve their potential. We serve students with the fewest resources and the greatest need.
Substitute Teaching Artist El Sistema Indianapolis is accepting applications for Substitute Teaching Artists. Substitute Teaching Artists will be contacted as needed in the event that a Lead or Assistant Teaching Artist is absent. Substitute Teaching Artists will receive $75 per site per day. Assistant Teaching Artist
Reports To: Lead Teaching Artist Stipend: $4500/year per site
El Sistema Indianapolis is seeking a passionate Ukulele Assistant Teaching Artist to join our team. If you play ukulele, enjoy working with students grades 2-5, and believe that music has the power to change lives, this is the job for you!
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Estimated Time Commitment:
10 weeks each in fall/spring school semesters
Fall: mid-September through early December
Spring: mid-February through early May
Approximately 5 hours/week per site
Class times
IPS 96 - Tuesday/Thursday 1:45-3:15
IPS 87 - Tuesday/Thursday 4:00-5:30
Curriculum Execution
Collaborate in building sustainable and impactful curriculum and lesson plans with teaching artists and ED
Teach class curriculum and create musical arrangements if needed
Pedagogy
Teach at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels
Teach instrumental technique, and musicianship
Cultivate a community of learning, fun, compassion, and joy
Empower students to achieve the highest level of musical excellence
Critically reflect on teaching practices through the lens of equity
Attend and assist in the direction of concerts
Receive teaching feedback with an open mind
Leadership
Communicate and collaborate with all teaching artists
Communicate with staff, volunteers, and parents regarding progress or issues as requested
Arrive 15 minutes early to set up classroom
As needed, stay after class to oversee student pickup
Adjust seating charts to create an optimal learning environment
Oversee tasks that may be delegated to students
Ensure attendance is taken and given to ED at the end of each day
Ensure that snacks are distributed
Ensure that ukuleles are tuned
Help supervise students as they arrive and depart
QUALIFICATIONS:
A strong knowledge of instrumental music, understanding of rhythms, notes, chords. Music degree and/or professional performing experience a plus
Desire to work within a social change environment
Experience working in a youth classroom setting or similar experience
Patient and understanding classroom management skills
Ability to interact and communicate clearly with a variety of ages (2nd grade through adult)
Great interpersonal skills
Punctual
Familiarity with Google Drive (Docs, Sheets)
Reliable transportation
Employment is contingent on background check
Availability to work at both sites a plus, but not required to apply
